Fiorenz a Roma II

Arezzo.
Cycling to Arezzo was perfect. The first climb to Montemarciano a short, steep challenge. We stopped immediately for for espresso and gelato at a small café run by an elderly woman. A local checked out our bikes outside, "Fausto Coppi!" We gave him the thumbs up.

A bout of rain had us suiting up under a gas station awning with an older man who was walking his dog. Our main goal at this point was lunch, however, so we continued on. It was Sunday so finding something to eat early in the afternoon was a challenge. We found in a little bar and propped our bikes against the wall. We settled in on the porch for a friendly bowl of pasta and to wait out the rain.

Riding over the hills afforded stunning views of surrounding olive trees, lush green wheat fields filled of bright red poppies. Small towns sprung up on the hilltops, one after the next. Farmhouses regularly dotted the flatlands. The sun peeked out after lunch and enticed us into the next town.

Cortona.
Let us simply say we got lost. I could tell you that we were using a German cycling map that we couldn't fully understand, but what is the point? We got lost. Back and forth around the hills we rode from Arezzo. In the light rain. On big roads. Until eventually, hours later, we rode back to Arezzo and took a train two stops forward.

to be continued...
